Marrakesh, Mar. 13 (Maroc-Actu) –
At least 596 Ukrainian civilians have been killed and 1,067 injured since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to the latest updated report from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, published on Sunday.
“From February 24 at 4 a.m. to March 12 at midnight, the High Commissioner recorded 1,663 civilian casualties in Ukraine: 596 dead and 1,067 injured,” the report said.
The dead have been identified as 124 men, 85 women, ten boys and six girls, along with 27 children and 344 unidentified adults. The injured were identified as 97 men, 69 women, 14 girls and four boys, along with 39 children and 844 adults who have yet to be identified.
By areas of control, the UN estimates that 459 dead and 509 injured the territories still controlled by the Ukrainian government, to which must be added 111 dead and 431 injured in the areas under its control in the disputed regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, in east of the country. In the area controlled by the militias of these self-proclaimed republics, the UN recorded 153 casualties (26 dead and 127 injured).
The UN notes that most civilian casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a “wide impact area”, heavy artillery, the use of rocket platforms, as well as strikes aerial.
The UN notes that the actual figures “are considerably higher, particularly in government-controlled territory and especially in recent days”, as information is lacking in some places where intense hostilities have taken place and many details on the victims “have yet to be corroborated”.
The UN also takes “note” of the report of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office that, as of 00:00 (local time) on March 13, 85 children had been killed and 100 injured.
The UN also acknowledges the existence of a report by the national police of the Kharkov region, according to which at 6:00 p.m. (local time) on March 12, the total number of civilian casualties in the Kharkov region was 205 dead.
