E.coli bacteria: after the death of a second child, the health authorities are sounding the alarm

Public Health France made the announcement on Saturday, adding that “22 additional cases are under investigation”. The health agency has also published recommendations to prevent this disease.

Since the beginning of February, a second child has died as part of the resurgence of cases of serious contamination with E. coli bacteria. The French Public Health Agency (SPF), which made this announcement on Saturday March 12, insists on “the prevention of food risks”.

But how to prevent these food risks? To fight once morest this disease “potentially serious for young children”, and “whose origin is most often food”, the health agency has republished prevention recommendations:

  • Hand washing should be systematic before preparing meals.
  • Proper cooking of meats, especially ground beef which must be cooked through.
  • No raw milk for children under 5 (no cheese or dairy product made from raw milk).

Following these recommendations may prevent you from contracting this disease, which is similar to “a complication of an episode of often bloody diarrhea, which can cause acute kidney failure”.

According to its press release, SPF identified as of March 11 26 cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) “linked to E. coli bacteria with similar characteristics have been identified” in children aged 1 to 15 and “two children are deceased”. Added to this are “22 additional cases” which “are under investigation”.
