Fuel prices: six questions on the discount of 15 cents per liter at the pump, announced by Jean Castex

While refueling his vehicle is increasingly expensive for the French, the Prime Minister announced this Saturday, March 12, a discount of 15 cents per liter at the pump from April. But how will this measure work?

Minus fifteen cents per liter of fuel at the pump. This is the measure announced this Saturday March 12 by Jean Castex at Parisianto support the French in the face of inflation, accentuated by the war in Ukraine, the repercussions of which on fuel prices are very strong.

How will it work?

The fares displayed at gas stations will be the same, “but by paying with your credit card or at the cash desk“, the consumer “will benefit from a reduction of 15 centimes per liter“. It’s then the State, which will reimburse this sum to the fuel distributors.

Who is this discount for?

This discount is for all French people who come to put fuel in their vehicle. There is no distinction made in the application of this measure between individuals, professionals, active, retired, low or high earners.

On which fuels does the discount apply?

The discount is valid on all fuels, the Prime Minister told Le Parisien. In contrast, RTL is accurate this Sunday that E85 might be the exception, in particular because of its already more advantageous taxation for users who run on ethanol.

When and how long?

This discount will apply from April 1 and will be effective for four months, said Jean Castex.

How much will it cost the state?

Price of the invoice for the State: “a little more than 2 billion euros”, indicates Jean Castex. At the same time, the Prime Minister calls on oil companies and distributors “to make an additional gesture. How would the French understand that they pay a full tank of diesel at 2 euros, while at the same time oil companies are still making big profits?”

How is the measure received?

Less than a month before the elections, should we see an electoral aim? Jean Castex denies it. “The first subject of concern of the French that I meet in my travels is the price at the pump”, he justifies.

On the other hand, this Sunday on France info Michel Fournier, the president of the Association of rural mayors of France welcomes the half-hearted measure and evokes a “white operation” for the State. “The two billion euros in question are not really lost. They were won with the percentage of VAT linked to the increase,” he says. Another unknown to take into account: “No one knows to date what the price of fuel will be on April 1”.
