No, the Canadian’s plan must not change. Rebuilding is still the best plan, regardless of the team’s current successes. The CH lacks talent. A lot of talent. And the best way to acquire talent is through the draft.
The Minnesota Wild tried to thwart the process. A big point that played in their favor: the arrival in North America of the young phenomenon Kirill Kaprizov. The Canadian has no Kaprizov to hide somewhere in the organization.
At first it seemed to work. The Wild had a huge upswing last year, but it’s a lot tougher this season. And yes, the Wild may make the playoffs once more this season. But barring a huge surprise, he won’t get very far.
And it will be the same in the next few years.
Basically, the Wild find themselves in the situation that the Canadian has often been under Marc Bergevin. He fights every year for a playoff berth, not the Stanley Cup.

The Canadiens don’t have a Kirill Kaprizov, but the Wild don’t have a Nick Suzuki.
And personally, if I have the choice between the two players, I take the center player before the winger, even if the latter is a better point producer.
The Canadiens are not starting at level one of their reconstruction. Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Alexander Romanov and Kaiden Guhle are all very interesting elements. The Habs will therefore not have to end up in the cellar for five years to replenish their coffers. But the Canadian must fish in the top 5 at least this year.
Moreover, if we take the teams that have won the Stanley Cup in the last ten years, there is one point in common. They have all, at some point in the team building process, been drafted in the top 5. Tampa Bay drafted Stamkos (1is), Hedman (2e) and Drouin (3e) . The Blues drafted Pietrangelo (4e) and Erik Johnson (1is). Washington a repêché Ovechkin (1is), Backstrom (4e) and Alzner (5e). Pittsburgh a Repéché Staal (2e), Crosby (1is), Malkin (2e) and Fleury (1is). Chicago drafted Kane (1is) and Toews (3e). And finally, Los Angeles drafted Schenn (5e) et Doughty (2e).
Many say there are plenty of examples of teams constantly drafting in the first place without ever having success. It may be, but in the last few years it’s virtually impossible for a team to make it all the way without going through a rebuild at some point or another.
