“My night”, beautiful first film on mourning and resilience through love

Casting director and screenwriter, Antoinette Boulat moves on to directing with my night, on screens Wednesday, March 9. She speaks of the feelings of a young girl who is reborn, following the loss of a much loved sister, thanks to the meeting of a singular young man.

At eighteen, Marion is in conflict with her mother, following the death five years ago of her sister. One night, following a party, she meets Alex and crosses Paris with him until dawn.

The age, the context, the situation, the encounter, everything contributes in my night to poetry. Nocturnal Paris lends itself to this, without Antoinette Boulat not falling into postcard clichés. It crosses the increasingly deserted capital as the night progresses, from the Place de la République to the Gare du Nord passing through the Indian quarter, Barbès then the Canal Saint-Martin and the quays of the Seine…It’s another Crossing Paris (Claude Autant-Lara, 1956) to which the director invites us, where the pangs between Jean Gabin and Bourvil give way to the birth of feelings between two beings.

Recently viewed in night doctor and In his lifetime, Lou Lampros plays a leading role. Mute, then shattering in the opening scene confronted with her mother Emmanuelle Bercot, then a party girl but still alone, Marion is haunted by mourning. Tom’s antique face, which she meets by chance, evokes an angel who will become her guardian, then a guide to redemption.

A classic theme, the acceptance of mourning results here from the love that settles to the rhythm of this walk in the night. The film moves from emotions to feelings with grace. “We have only the choice between change, death and catastrophe” said Marion. This is the first path she will take following an initiation, a life lesson. Journey to the end of the night that ends with a new dawn, my night augurs well for a great filmmaker.
