Xi Jinping calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint in Ukraine. The top priority is to prevent loss of control | Anue Juheng – International Political Economy

Chinese President Xi Jinping called on all parties to “maximize restraint” on the Ukraine issue on Tuesday and said China was “sad to see the war rekindled in Europe,” Chinese state media reported. The strongest statement ever made by the Ukrainian conflict.

In a virtual meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Xi said China, France and Germany should work together to support Russia’s peace talks with Ukraine, state-run CCTV reported.

He was quoted by CCTV as saying Xi called the situation in Ukraine “worrying” and said the top priority was to prevent the situation from escalating or “out of control”.

CCTV reported that China maintains that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be abided by, the legitimate security concerns of all countries should be taken seriously, and all efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully should be supported.

He also said France and Germany should work to reduce the negative impact of the crisis, raising concerns regarding the impact of sanctions on global finance, energy supplies, transportation and supply chain stability.

China has refused to condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine, or call it an invasion, and has repeatedly voiced its opposition to what it calls unlawful sanctions once morest Russia.
