Policewomen in Mexico, victims of discrimination, harassment and labor inequality, points out Common Cause Discrimination, harassment and sexual abuse, as well as labor inequalityare the main factors of which policewomen have been victims within the corporations and that were detected by the organization Common Cause in his study on violence once morest policewomen in Mexico.

According to the survey carried out by the organization “What do the police think?”, in its 2019 edition and applied to 5,000 state police men and women throughout the country, it was found that 3 out of 100 women said they had suffered or been witnesses of sexual abuse.

Also, 5 out of 10 women considered that there is discrimination in the corporation; compared to men, who only 2 out of 10 agreed with this opinion.

On the other hand, of all the women surveyed, 35% indicated that one of their partners had received offensive compliments, comments regarding their appearance or of a sexual nature.

Regarding the employment situation, 37% of the male elements stated that they had received an incentive or recognition at some time, while only 28% of the women received some incentive.

In terms of any job promotion, only 21% of the female police officers surveyed were granted a promotion, compared to 34% of the male elements.

Police women decide not to report attacks

Cause in common explained in her project “Being a Police Woman in Mexico”, that of the total number of policewomen surveyed (300), almost a third responded that they had been victims of verbal aggression, such as receiving offensive compliments or lewd comments, however of them, 83% decided not to report these acts, considering that there would be no sanctions for their aggressor.

“Of the 17% who did file a complaint, 54% indicated that there was no action by the authority in response to the complaint, and in 30% of cases there was a sanction once morest the aggressor,” he explained.

The organization also highlighted the murders of policewomen who manage to rise to relevant positions, due to the danger involved in their work. According to the organization, so far this six-year term, 61 female police officers have been murdered.
