Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi said that his team should score early if they want to keep their hopes of crossing Liverpool in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 tomorrow (Tuesday).
Liverpool won 2-0 in the first leg in Milan, despite a strong start to Inter, who reached the knockout stages of the competition for the first time in a decade.
Inzaghi told a press conference: “It is important and necessary to score in the first half. Tomorrow’s match will be difficult, but we are very motivated. Inter have not reached these roles in the championship for many years and we knew that we would face a strong team following we finished second in the group. We did a good job in the first leg and we will do it once more tomorrow.”
Inter have fasted from scoring in four consecutive games, including once morest Liverpool, but their goal absence came to an end in impressive fashion when the Italian champions crushed bottom club Salrnitana 5-0 on Friday thanks to a Lautaro Martinez hat-trick and an Eden Dzeko brace.
Inzaghi described Liverpool as one of the three best teams in the world and admitted that the match would be more difficult than the one at San Siro, but demanded that his team treat it as an opportunity to improve.
The Italian coach said: “We will face the strongest team in Europe alongside Bayern Munich and Manchester City. It will be a difficult and more difficult atmosphere than the confrontation at San Siro, but such matches help everyone to mature.”
Inzaghi confirmed that Ivan Perisic will be ready for the match following his absence for two weeks, and that the only absentee is Nicolo Barilla, who has been suspended.
