At least two (2) Blue Helmets were killed and four others were injured, Monday, in the explosion of a logistics convoy of the force of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), north of Mopti in the center of the country, the UN mission said in a statement.

“This morning, a MINUSMA logistics convoy on its way to Timbuktu hit an improvised explosive device north of Mopti. According to an initial report, the explosion caused the death of two blue helmets, and injured four others”, announced the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) on its official page, affirming that the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General and Head of MINUSMA (SRSG), El-Ghassim WANE, strongly condemns this attack.

The Head of MINUSMA further recalls that ”attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law”, calling on the Malian authorities to spare no effort to identify the perpetrators of these attacks so that they can be quickly brought to justice.

El-Ghassim WANE also underlines that this new attack, like those that preceded it, once once more reminds us of the imperative need for even more sustained efforts to stabilize the Center of Mali.

Ambushes and attacks with improvised explosive devices are recurrent, particularly in central Mali and the region of the three borders between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.

Mali has been rocked by insecurity since 2012 and, despite the deployment of regional and international forces, the situation still shows no signs of stabilizing.
