The war in Ukraine may impact the piloting of the International Space Station (ISS) with a risk of abandonment of Russian pilots.
Russia might “withdraw” of the International Space Station
The head of the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos has already hinted at a possible departure of Russian pilots from the international space station. Russia might “withdraw” of the International Space Station, indeed implied this person in charge. A scenario that might occur if its relations with the United States become unlivable.
On board theISS, the Americans are responsible for supplying electricity and providing life support to the entire orbital complex. For their part, the Russians have the mission of ensuring the propulsion of the maintenance of the ISS at an altitude of approximately 400 kilometers. They are also responsible for attitude control and course corrections.
Necessity of Progress freighters to pilot the Station
The russian pilots use the Progress freighters moored to the Zvezda module. Without Progress to pilot the station, the Station’s orbit would lower day by day and week by week and it would then be unable to correct its trajectory to, among other things, avoid debris. The Russian intervention on the displacement of the international space station is vital. It is therefore imperative that the NASA seeks an urgent solution to ensure the piloting of the ISS in the event of the abandonment of the Russian segment, reports Futura-sciences.com.
