The Winter Paralympics, which will start in the Chinese capital, Beijing, today, Friday, will witness the participation of 138 women, which represents a historical record, which is five times more than the previous edition of the Games.

The participation of 138 women out of 564 athletes, which is the same total number of participants in the previous edition in South Korea.

As International Women’s Day approaches, “I am happy to see that the number of female athletes has grown tremendously and reached record levels,” said the President of the International Paralympic Committee, Brazilian Andrew Parsons.

“There is still a lot of work to be done to achieve gender equality, but the significant increase in female participation in the Winter Games in the last 20 years confirms that we are heading in the right direction,” he added.

Parsons highlighted that reaching this number of participants is an achievement, as the number is equal between the past and the current version of the Paralympics.
