(Beijing = Yonhap News) Reporter Zhang Bo-in and Paralympic Joint Foundation = A bright torch has rekindled in Beijing, China, 12 days following the Olympic flame went out.
The 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympic Games (Paralympic Games) announced a strong start with the opening ceremony held at the National Stadium in Beijing, China, at 8:00 pm local time (9:00 pm Korean time) on the 4th.
Beijing, which hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics, was the first city to host both the Winter and Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
Zhang Yimou, a famous Chinese film director who oversaw the Beijing Summer Olympics 14 years ago and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, which ended last month, also served as artistic director for this Paralympic Games.
Despite the chaos caused by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the challenges of players from each country continue.
The Beijing Winter Paralympic Games will be held in Beijing, Yanqing, and Zhangjiakou, China from this day to the 13th, and fierce battles will be held in 78 sports in 6 sports.
The slogan is ‘Together for a Shared Future’, similar to the 2022 Winter Olympics.
It was initially known that regarding 1,500 athletes from 50 countries would participate in this event, but 46 countries have been confirmed to participate.
Russia, which invaded Ukraine, and Belarus, who sympathized with it, were banned from participating in the Games due to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) ban decision on the 3rd day before the opening day.
In Ukraine, 20 athletes and 9 guides will participate.
Like the opening ceremony of the last Olympic Games, which was somewhat simplified in the followingmath of the Corona 19, the Paralympic Games also focused on adding meaning to each event rather than grandeur. The theme of the opening ceremony is ‘Blossoming of Life’.
All participants are people from all walks of life. Disabled and non-disabled people, who are busy living their lives, took time together to practice a performance that welcomes people from all over the world.
The full-fledged event started with a time to look back on the history of the Paralympic Games.
The last 12 Paralympic Games were introduced on the stage representing the starry sea, and by ‘2022 Beijing’, the sea turned into ice.
Spectators who filled the spectators celebrated the opening together by creating starlight with flashes.
Next, disabled athletes participating in six sports ran down the slope avoiding obstacles, and the countdown began with the curling stones sliding.
The Chinese flag was hoisted following Chinese President Xi Jinping and IPC Chairman Andrew Parsons were introduced.
24 visually impaired college students sang the national anthem in a cappella, and the deaf performers expressed the national anthem in sign language.
After the Paralympic mascot ‘Xelonglong’ appeared on skates, delegations from each country, the main character of the event, entered.
Korea ranked 35th out of 46 teams according to the stroke order of Simplified Chinese characters. South Korea dispatched 82 athletes, including 32 athletes, to this tournament.
A total of 41 people participated in the opening ceremony, including executives and 18 players (13 hockey, 5 curling), including Korean team leader Yoon Kyung-sun.
The rider was played by Baek Hye-jin, the lead of the mixed wheelchair curling team ‘Confession of Jang Yoon-jung’ (Rolling Stone, Uijeongbu).
It is the first time in the history of the Korean Winter Paralympic Games that a female athlete competed as a sole jockey. At the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games last year, Boccia Choi Ye-jin held a Taegeukgi with her mother, Moon Woo-young.
Belgium was the first to enter, while Ukraine was fourth.
The spectators silently watched the squad waving flags with the Hong Kong flag and the Beijing Olympic emblem, and when the Ukrainian team was introduced, cheers and applause came out for a moment.
IPC President Parsons stood up and greeted the players with applause.
Italy, the host country of the 2026 Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, appeared in the 45th place, and the host country China entered the final 46th with cheers from the home crowd.
After the speech of Tsai Qi, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, who served as the organizer of the conference, IPC Chairman Parsons came forward and emphasized ‘peace’ and ‘reversal’.
Regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Chairman Parsons said, “What is happening in the world right now is terrifying.” “The 21st century is a time for dialogue and diplomacy, not for war or hate. It was adopted by the 193 member states at the General Assembly of the United Nations, and it must be observed and must not be violated.”
After the speech, President Xi Jinping announced the opening of the session. The following event contained the stories of ‘ordinary people’.
Volunteers and athletes with disabilities, dancers, climbers who climb Everest with prosthetic legs, disabled and non-disabled couples, twins, etc. light up the world.
Agitos, the symbol of the Paralympic Games, was transferred from the palm of one visually impaired performer to the hands of others.
This is a gesture of hope that more people with disabilities will change their lives through sports.
The organizers said, “We will be presenting the smallest agitos in the history of the Paralympic Games,” but explained that this moment was the ‘highlight’ of the opening ceremony.
When the Paralympic flag was hoisted, the blind wind ensemble performed Paralympic hymns. The ensemble, made up of 47 students aged 10 to 22 years old, performed 116 days of practice despite being unable to read the sheet music to create a perfect stage.
At the end of the opening ceremony, the ‘Winter Paralympic Waltz’ was presented. Also, disabled and non-disabled people decorated the stage together to express ‘harmony’.
At the end, the torch was lit and fireworks were displayed.
The torch lit from Stokemandeville, England, the birthplace of the Paralympic Games, was delivered virtually, and fireworks from eight cities in Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou were merged into one.
Eight Chinese Paralympicians took over the torch at the stadium, and Li Dawn, who won four gold medals in Paralympic track and field alone, took the final runner-up.
As in the Olympics, the final ignition of the torch was completed by inserting the torch into the pedestal installed in the center of the huge snowflake model.
When Ridun, a visually impaired player, pierced the torch following several attempts, cheers erupted in the stadium.
