In Aleksander Aamodt Kilde’s camp, people have obviously resigned. At least when it comes to the fight for the big crystal ball. “Even if Aleksander won all three races in Kviftfjell and Odermatt didn’t score a single point there, Marco would still be 57 points ahead in the overall World Cup. And following that, there are still two races in Odermatt’s flagship discipline, giant slalom, on the program in Kranjska Gora,” calculates Christian Höflehner, head of racing at Kilde’s outfitter Atomic.
But what if Kilde suddenly puts on the giant skis once more and finds his way back to his old strength in this area? As a reminder: Shortly before he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in January 2021, the Norwegian finished 4th and 5th in the two giant slaloms in Adelboden.
Höflehner: “Aleksander actually trained giants for three days recently. Nevertheless, it is questionable whether a start in Kranjska Gora will make sense for him. Especially since the FIS scheduled the first training for the final descent in Courchevel the day following the race in Slovenia. And the fight for the small descent and Super-G ball is currently above everything else at Kilde. »
The big attack from Odermatt
Kilde is currently in the lead in downhill and in the overall Super-G ranking. But even in these ratings, Odermatt might still overtake him.
In the Super-G, the man from Nidwalden is 61 points behind with two races to go. In the downhill, Odi is only 44 points behind with three competitions to go. Because the six-time winner of the season is 261 points ahead of Manuel Feller in the overall giant slalom ranking, Odermatt can even dream of four crystal globes.
Hermann Maier (49) last won four balls in one season in the 2000/01 season.
Kugelblitz grabs the record ball
Beat Feuz might also write another very special story. The Olympic champion is only eight points behind Kilde in the downhill classification and might therefore grab the ball in the king’s discipline for the fifth time in a row. And nobody has managed that in the 55-year history of the World Cup.
