Unlike 141 other countries that voted to end the invasion, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria sided with Vladimir Putin.

These places “are dictatorial countries which have a debt with Russia or which are trying to wrest something from Russia”, points out political scientist Loïc Tassé.

One might have expected more states to do the same, says the columnist. Thus, Iran, in negotiations on its nuclear program with Russia in particular, abstained from voting, a position also adopted by Iraq and China. Saudi Arabia and Israel voted to end the war in Ukraine.

After more than two days of interventions at the United Nations rostrum, the resolution demands that Moscow “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces” from Ukraine and “condemns the decision of the Russia to put its nuclear forces on alert”.

Led by the European Union in coordination with Ukraine, the text also “deplores” “in the strongest terms Russia’s aggression once morest Ukraine” and affirms “its attachment to sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity” of that country, including “its territorial waters”.

“The message from the General Assembly is loud and clear,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told reporters. End hostilities in Ukraine – now. Open the door to dialogue and diplomacy – now. »

Historic voting

For the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, the result of the vote is “historic”. This is a point of view shared by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, for whom “rarely has the contrast between good and evil been so striking”.

The resolution entitled “Aggression once morest Ukraine” also calls for unhindered access to humanitarian aid, while difficult discussions are taking place in the Security Council on a Franco-Mexican draft resolution on the same subject.
