DDR5 only on Raptor Lake?

Some informations hint that Intel would (strongly) push with its motherboard manufacturing partners, so that the future 700 chipset series (intended for the 13th generation aka Raptor Lake) is only available with DDR5 support.

With Raptor Lake, Intel wants to accelerate the adoption of DDR5

Intel’s 13th Gen Raptor Lake processors will include both DDR5 and DDR4 IMCs. However, the blues seem to be putting a lot of effort into accelerating the rate ofadopting DDR5 memory. The looming option seems to be an exclusive use of DDR5 on 700 series motherboards but it will still be possible to use Raptor Lake chips with DDR4 memory on 600 series motherboards. the next generation with existing motherboards is already acquired and confirmed by Intel.

At the moment, the difference between the 600 and 700 series chipsets is not clearly palpable. A priori, the developments do not seem to go beyond the increase in the number of PCI-Express 4.0 slots or the addition of a few additional USB ports in the high-end chipset, the Intel Z790.

AMD has also decided to push only support for DDR5 on its future AM5 platform. For Intel, having two “compatible” platforms that can allow combinations of either DDR4 or DDR5 is undoubtedly a major advantage over future competition from AMD.
