Bochum-Freiburg 1:2 nV
In the Bundesliga on course for the Champions League, in the cup only one step away from the final in Berlin: In his eleventh year as head coach of SC Freiburg, Christian Streich (56) is heading for his biggest coup. The fifth-placed team beat newly promoted Bochum 2-1 (0-0) following extra time in the quarter-finals and made it into the last four for only the second time in the club’s history. But it is an absolute thriller. Roland Sallai (120th) only scored in the very last minute and propelled Freiburg into the semi-finals. In regular time, Nils Petersen (51st) scored the lead for the Breisgau team, who have only lost one of their last seven competitive games. Substitute Sebastian Polter (64th) still equalizes. Then the drama in stoppage time. The Sallais winning goal was preceded by a very bitter mistake by Bochum’s Leitsch. His back pass totally fails, so that Sallai can run to goal alone and make it through to the semi-finals. In front of 10,000 fans, Bochum, who returned from the Bundesliga, had their dream of a second cup final following 1988 shattered, while Freiburg dreamed.
The goals: 51. Petersen 0: 1, 64. Polter 1: 1, 120. Sallai 1: 2.
