NBA: Historic WNBA fine: $500,000 to the New York Liberty

La WNBA imposed a fine of $500,000 on the New York Liberty for the repeated use of charter flights during the second half of the 2021 season, a problem that has been in the spotlight in recent years in the competition and which the League already echoed in 2019.

The amount of the penalty is a record in this regard, although the initial amount, reduced by half following an appeal, was one million dollars. The fine includes the expulsion of the Liberty manager, Oliver Weisbergof the executive committee of the League, as reported by Sports Illustrated.

The continued use of charter flights it is considered a competitive advantage since not all the teams have the economic possibilities to face them, and it supposes a violation of the collective agreement of the League.

The Libertyone of the eight founding teams of the WNBA and one of the three, along with Sparks (LA) y Mercury (Phoenix) who remain in the city of origin when the League was born 25 seasons ago, might lose all their future Draft elections, see their directors disqualified and even face definitive expulsion from the competition.
