Mike Riley, managing director of the match officials committee in professional English football, has apologized to Everton coach Frank Lampard and club president Bill Kenwright for the mistake of the Toffs match once morest Manchester City in the Premier League.
In the match that took place last Saturday at Goodison Park in the 27th round of the English Premier League, referee Paul Tierney did not award a penalty kick for Everton in the last minutes of the match following the ball touched the hand of the Citizens midfielder Rodrigo Hernandez.
The shot sparked widespread controversy in England, but the video referee considered that the game was offside from the beginning before the ball was touched by the City player.
After the end of the match, City won with a goal without a response, Everton submitted an official complaint to the English Premier League.
According to the “Liverpool Echo” newspaper, Lampard and the Everton chief received calls on match day from Riley (the managing director of the committee responsible for match officials in English professional football) to apologize for the error that occurred in the match.
It is worth noting that Manchester City is at the top of the English Premier League table with 66 points (from 27 rounds), 6 points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, with one match remaining.
