Clubs from Russia will not be able to participate in the UEFA tournament
New Delhi: Russia’s setback in sports as Ukraine’s occupation continues. FIFA has announced a temporary suspension from international football. Russia will not be able to compete in the World Cup qualifiers.
In addition to FIFA, the European Football Association (UEFA) has taken similar steps. Clubs from Russia will not be able to participate in the UEFA tournament.
Russia have three weeks to go before the World Cup qualifiers. Russia might miss the World Cup if the situation continues to worsen. FIFA and UEFA have said in a joint statement that “football is always regarding standing together, the unity of Ukraine under attack”.
Such international sanctions on sports have not occurred in decades. It had taken steps to exclude Russian athletes and officials from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC explained that this was necessary to protect the integrity of global sporting events and to ensure the safety of all participants.
Exclusion from international forums might affect Russia economically. At the same time, Russia, the powerhouse of the sports world, is expected to suffer a major setback.
The World Cup qualifiers are on March 24. Poland has already announced that it will not compete with Russia. Russia’s Spartak Moscow have been eliminated from the UEFA Europa League. The team’s next match was once morest German club Leipzig. UEFA also announced that Leipzig had qualified for the quarterfinals under the circumstances.
