As reported by the SBB on request from 20 minutes, refugees from the Ukraine can travel on their trains for free. “For the time being, SBB enables people who have fled Ukraine to travel to their destination in Switzerland or to transit by train easily and free of charge. This is in accordance with the Federal Council’s decision today, February 28, 2022, and in consultation with the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) », the SBB announced.
This is also confirmed by the Alliance SwissPass. The decision was made in consultation with Deutsche Bahn and the Austrian Federal Railways.
Half a million people on the run
According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), almost half a million Ukrainians are currently on the run. Long queues of cars and buses formed at checkpoints on the borders with Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and non-EU member Moldova. Others crossed the borders on foot, lugging their wartime belongings to the safety of the EU.
Hundreds of war refugees were gathered at a makeshift reception center in the Hungarian border town of Beregsurany, waiting to be transported to transit hubs that would take them deeper into Hungary or beyond. In Poland, the country with the most arrivals of refugees so far, trains continued to bring people to the border town of Przemyśl on Monday. Many of the people, wrapped in winter coats because of the cold temperatures, carried small suitcases with them as they queued on the platform to leave the station.
