White House calls on China to condemn Russian invasion of Ukraine – RTHK

Russia’s offensive once morest Ukraine continues, with President Vladimir Putin placing a nuclear deterrent on high alert. The White House has called on China to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

White House press secretary Psaki said China had implemented some of the sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States and its allies and spoke in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty last week, but argued that Beijing should do more.

In an interview, Psaki said that now is not the time to stand idly by and to speak up and condemn Putin and Russia for invading sovereign countries. He also said that President Biden has not spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping recently, and he does not rule out phone calls in the future.

In Beijing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said a few days ago that the door to a political solution to the Ukrainian issue has not been completely closed under the current circumstances. It is hoped that the parties concerned will remain calm and rational and resolve the issue peacefully through negotiation. China will continue to promote peace and talks in its own way, and welcome and encourage all efforts to promote a diplomatic solution.
