COVID outbreak affected the 30 grandparents of the Nursing Home

The application of the three doses once morest the coronavirus at 30 grandparents the Home Elders of the Little Sisters of the Poor saved their lives. During the last two weeks there has been a new outbreak of COVID from which they gradually recovered.

“We had an outbreak and last week we discharged them. All of the 30 grandparents in the Nursing Home had COVID and we discharged 100% of them, none of them died”, said the Associate Director of the Castro Rendón Hospital and director (ad honorem) of the Sisters of the Poor Home for the Elderly, Adelaida Goldman, with relief.

The first outbreak in the Home was in October 2020. The doctor recalled that, on that occasion, even without the coronavirus vaccine, 30% of older adults died at the time they were experiencing the disease. Percentage that rose to 40% as consequences of the sequelae of the disease.

Goldman gave that some who did not die with the COVID outbreak, but did so a month or two months later due to lung conditions, a heart attack or stroke, since the disease had left them deteriorated. “There were between 30 and 40% deaths in the first COVID outbreak, which occurred in October 2020, which coincided with the first wave,” he pointed out.

This second and final outbreak started regarding two weeks ago. He said that symptoms compatible with COVID began to manifest in one of the 30 grandparents, despite the fact that they did not receive visitors and complied with all the protocols. “We believe it was an employee, but we cannot confirm it. It is also true that the grandparents go to the ophthalmologist, that the nuns come and go for the collection and that a priest goes to give mass and that he had COVID,” he added.

He explained that they started with symptoms, they were swabbed and they were positive. All mild, none requiring oxygen, none admitted. The ten days passed and one by one they were discharged and today we have none with nothing. One developed pneumonia, but with antibiotics, at home,” the doctor explained to LM Neuquén.

These are older adults ranging from 70 to 98 years. “Same virus, same patients with the same vulnerability of being at risk, with comorbidity and another result. What changed? It was the vaccine, everyone has the three doses,” Goldman said.

And he even said that Father Juan Carlos was infected with COVID once more, who is diabetic, is overweight and was very ill the first time. Unlike the first time, this time the symptoms that manifested were not more than a cold.

The doctor pointed out that those who have not yet been vaccinated have all the information to do so. It is a population estimated at regarding 40 thousand people, who would not have done so yet.

“If they (the unvaccinated) are going to get sick, there would be the possibility of treating them without taking out resources. Even when you are free to decide not to get vaccinated when you get sick, it may be that I cannot attend to you. In this case, since there is less tension in the system healthcare, one can accompany these decisions,” he added.

The emergency specialist emphasized that “the issue is that the virus is mutating in them. Having a higher level of replication has a higher probability of mutation. The cuckoo is that a new variant does not appear where the vaccines have no effect, which is not the case now, or where, despite the vaccines, the consequences are different.
