  • Roman Abramovich hands over responsibility for Chelsea.

  • The club announced this in a statement from the owner.

  • The Russian had come under increasing pressure because of his relationship with Vladimir Putin.

It’s a hammer that hit the football world on Saturday night: Roman Abramowitsch, owner of Chelsea FC, hands over the leadership of the club from the English Premier League. The trustees of the non-profit Chelsea Foundation are now in charge of the fortunes of the Blues.

He always made his decisions in the best interest of the club, the Russian writes in a statement released by the club. “I remain committed to these values. That is why today I am delegating the administration and oversight of Chelsea FC to the trustees of the Chelsea Charitable Foundation.”

It’s over following almost 20 years

The oil billionaire explains: “I believe that they are currently in the best position to protect the interests of the club, the players, the employees and the fans.” Abramovich took over the Blues in 2003 for around 170 million. Today the value of the club is estimated at around two billion Swiss francs. The 55-year-old remains the owner of the club.

Abramovich is one of many oligarchs and companies facing sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine due to their proximity to Russia’s ruler Vladimir Putin. It has already been proposed in the UK Parliament to freeze his accounts and confiscate properties, including Chelsea. By handing over the club to a foundation, Abramovich avoids a forced sale (at least for the time being).

Abramovich’s daughter once morest Putin

Meanwhile, Sofia Abramovich, the daughter of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, clarified her position on the war in Ukraine on Saturday: On Instagram she shared in an Instagram story what she thinks of the Russian war in Ukraine. The 27-year-old showed the words “Russia wants a war with Ukraine” and crossed out the word “Russia” in red and replaced it with “Putin”.

She commented: “The biggest and most successful lie of Kremlin propaganda is that most Russians are behind Putin.” Sofia is one of Abramovich’s seven children.

With this story, Abramwitsch's daughter Sofia spoke out once morest the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.
