Patna: A Muslim youth was beaten to death by a gang of thugs for allegedly eating beef. The victim was identified as Mohammad Khalil Alam, 34, a local leader of the Janata Dal (United) in Samastipur. Police found Khalil’s burnt body on the river bank. The body is believed to have been doused in petrol following being beaten.

Khalil’s body was found four days following his family members complained to the police that he was missing. It is alleged that following the complaint was lodged, some people called Khalil’s family and demanded money for Khalil’s release.

A video of Khalil being surrounded and beaten by a mob for asking if he had eaten beef was circulated on social media. Khalil is seen begging for his life by shaking hands with the mob. The video also shows Khalil being asked where the cows are being slaughtered in Samastipur and who is selling the beef.

Opposition leader Tejaswi Yadav has said that the killing of a leader of the ruling JDU was a sign of law and order situation in Bihar. Tejaswi also demanded that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar respond to the recurrence of such incidents in Bihar.
