Cantonal statistics confirm the inexorable rise of hybrid and electric cars. In 2021, these made up 47% of new cars put into circulation at the end of the lake (5,250 out of 11,102 registrations). Five years earlier, this proportion was only 4%.

The State also notes that the total number of passenger cars in circulation in the canton has decreased for the fifth consecutive year. On September 30, 2021, it reached 216,744 units, i.e. 1% less than in 2020. On the other hand, the total number of motor vehicles registered in Geneva (which notably includes motorcycles and utility vehicles) is up by 1.7%.

More motorcycles

It should be noted that the number of new cars put into circulation in 2021 (11,102) is equivalent to that recorded in 2020 (11,077) but is very much lower than the average for the years 2015 to 2019, which stood at 15,110 units. The number of new motorcycles increases between 2020 and 2021 (from 4,728 to 5,279), while the average number of registrations recorded from 2015 to 2019 stands at 5,000 units.

In total, nearly 60,000 motorcycles circulate in Geneva (57,931), a figure that has risen sharply since 2005 (42,572). The number of passenger cars, on the other hand, has remained fairly stable over the same period: 216,744 in 2021, compared to 217,487 in 2005.
