Guardians of the Galaxy: Square Enix still disappointed with a Marvel license

Game news Guardians of the Galaxy: Square Enix still disappointed with a Marvel license

With the success of the MCU in the cinema, we all thought that the Marvel franchise was necessarily synonymous with success… We must believe that we were wrong. Since Square Enix won a partnership with the American giant, the Japanese publisher has had a string of disappointments.

After Marvel’s Avengers, it’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s turn to disappoint

Square Enix had gold in its hands, and yet the publisher managed to miss the launch of Marvel’s Avengers in September 2020 by offering a title that did not meet the expectations of the press and players. Square Enix also seemed to be in agreement with the feedback, since the publisher had even declared, just following the launch of the Guardians of the Galaxythat Crystal Dynamics was not the right choice to forge a game-service:

The adoption of the game-as-a-service model has highlighted issues that we are likely to face in our future game development projects, such as the need to select game designs that match the unique skills and tastes of our studios and development teams.

We imagined then that the studio, on the strength of its errors, had revised its strategy to have as many households as possible adopt Guardians of the Galaxy, their new creation, but in the end it is not so. Even if the game developed by Eidos Montreal conquered the press and almost all the players who tried the experience, the title did not sell well enough.

Indeed, Square Enix has just published its balance sheet of the second half of the year 2021 and confessed in the latter that all is not well for the band of Star-Lord. Yes Final Fantasy VII Remake made beautiful scores, this is not the case of the Guardians of the Galaxy therefore, as evidenced by the returns of the Japanese publisher.

Despite excellent reviews, the game’s sales at launch were lower than we expected.

It now only remains to hope that the video game adventures of Star-Lord and his friends will succeed in attracting a wider audience in the long term. As a reminder, on our side, we particularly liked the adventure game, since we gave it the rating of 16/20.
