The Bicentennial University of Aragua awarded Freddy Bernal, governor of the state of Táchira, the title of Doctorate “Honoris Causa”, which generated criticism on social networks. Besides the resignation of professor and internationalist lawyer Adolfo Salgueiroto his position as a member of the Academic Council of the Politic Center Academy of Florida Global University.

“The Bicentennial University of Aragua gives an Honorary Doctorate to Freddy Bernal. While its rector Basilio Sánchez and the university are owners in Miami of the Florida Global University of Doral (FGU). Double standards!” said José Colina, president of the Organization of Politically Persecuted Venezuelans in Exile.

The academic institution, located in San Joaquín de Turmero, Aragua state, granted this recognition to Bernal on February 18.

However, the act generated controversy in the networks because the current governor of Táchira has been included since 2011 in the Clinton list (or Kingpin List). In addition, he is listed as sanctioned by the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

“A doctorate without studies. Only in chavism. Those universities that awarded it do not deserve any kind of merit”, reproached a user through Twitter.

The criticism that Freddy Bernal received following the honorary title by the UBA

For his part, Freddy Bernal celebrated the distinction received and invited the tachirenses “to be in permanent training.” Different responses arose to this publication, both in support and in disagreement due to the mention received.

The doctorate “Honoris Causa” is an honorary degree awarded by universities, professional associations or colleges to eminent persons. That is, it is given mainly to characters who have stood out in certain professional fields. And that they are not necessarily graduates of a certain career.
