– In China, the Olympic flame has gone out
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach “closed” the 2022 Winter Olympics during the closing ceremony on Sunday in Beijing.
“And now I must mark the end of this unforgettable Olympic experience, I declare the Winter Games of the 24th Olympiad in Beijing 2022 closed,” Bach said a few minutes before the Olympic cauldron was extinguished.
The next Winter Games will be held in Italy, in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, in 2026 (February 6-22), while the Olympic flame will be lit next time for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris ( July 26-August 11).
The 2022 Olympics took place in a health bubble and without spectators, except for a few guests, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They brought together 2,911 athletes representing 91 Olympic committees competing for 109 titles.
Norway finished top of the medal table with 37 medals including 16 gold, ahead of Germany (27 including 12 gold) and China (15 including 9 gold), the host country setting a new record for an edition of the Winter Olympics.
