“Last year, my doctor came to attend my first injection. He wanted to see this medical advance,” says Alexandre*. This Genevan learned in 2018 that he was HIV-positive. For three years, he swallowed two tablets, then one, every day at the same time. But for this forties, this daily meeting belongs to the past.

As part of a clinical trial, Alexandre was one of the first in Switzerland to swap his pills for intramuscular injections, administered every two months. A long-acting drug that Alexandra Calmy describes as a “real revolution”. The HIV/AIDS Unit at HUG, for which she is responsible, is training the caregivers who will deliver this treatment, authorized by Swissmedic in October 2021. And the infectious disease specialist expects marketing to begin very soon.
