Extreme cold at the Olympics: “Body only in emergency mode” – winter sports

Olympia 2022 is coming to an end! ÖSV sports director Toni Giger takes a critical look at the games.

While the Ski Association is very satisfied with the performance, there are critical words regarding the conditions in Beijing and the surrounding area.

“There were organizational impasses and sometimes real fights from us,” Giger describes the local conditions.
“China certainly still has a way to go in its political development. If there are problems, then there are few people who can solve them without fear,” says the ÖSV sports director in a warning.

The cold is also a big factor: “In the future, you’ll have to think very carefully regarding whether to award the Olympic Games to places where the temperatures are usually around minus 20 degrees. There have been a number of athletes where the body has switched to emergency operation. That should be critically questioned in the future, because it’s regarding the health of the athletes and that’s our top priority.”

There is a positive balance: “After this first difficult week, it was a very nice Olympic Games. Of course, with a very, very limited radius of action.”
