While consumption became Energy Drinks Popular these days for its ease of availability and immediate results by giving more activity, focus and alertness following taking it, recent research has warned of its deadly damage that can lead to heart failure and stroke in healthy people.
In this regard, Rola Al-Hajj Ali, a rheumatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, said that “energy drinks contain large doses of caffeine and sometimes other stimulants,” according to the “Daily Express” website.
She added, “We found that some people who take it arrive at the hospital with a stroke or severe bleeding in the brain.”
Sudden headache that ends in a stroke
She explained that when a stroke occurs following consuming an energy drink, it is the result of reflex cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) and its main symptom is a sudden headache, which quickly intensifies within a few minutes.
According to her, this causes a sudden spasm of the blood vessels in the brain, which can either restrict blood flow to the organ or cause bleeding.
The reason why energy drinks stimulate RCVS is still unclear, but it’s believed that excess caffeine intake might be the cause of the problem, but that it significantly increases the risk of developing atrial fibrillation or arrhythmia.

In this context, the Journal of Cardiology in Aging reported that atrial fibrillation is associated with a fivefold increased risk of stroke and death.
This was confirmed by the authors of a research paper, published in 2017 in the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology, who noted the prevalence of unexplained cardiac arrest following consuming energy drinks.
Energy drinks are full of sugar and caffeine, and consuming a lot of them increases the risk of diabetes, blood pressure and heart disease, as well as insomnia and anxiety.
