The dispute centers on how Ahold Delhaize took over the US stores of Belgian subsidiary Delhaize in 2018. These supermarkets are worth more than the Dutch paid for the acquisition, according to the Belgian tax authorities.
The tax authorities sent their request in December 2020, and a challenge from Ahold Delhaize was rejected. For each year in which the company did not pay money to the taxman, an interest of 4% was calculated.
Ahold Delhaize has now agreed to pay the sums claimed, to avoid paying more. The amount already included a 10% fine.
