A new hope has dawned on the world following an American woman became the third person in the world to recover from the human immunodeficiency virus, known as “AIDS.”“ This is thanks to stem cell transplantation from umbilical cord blood, according to new research “CNN”
The woman, who the researchers described as middle-aged and of mixed race, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia 4 years following HIV diagnosis following the leukemia was diagnosed.
She received a high dose of chemotherapy that destroyed her blood cells later on and then she got a stem cell transplant from an adult family member to replenish her blood cell levels
This was a bridge to preserve her blood cells and just over 3 years following the transplant in 2017, she stopped taking HIV medication and had no detectable virus 14 months later.
