The next Xterra Cross Triathlon World Championships will be held on October 1, 2022 in Trentino, Italy. It is the first time in the 25-year history of the Xterra World Championship that the titles will be awarded outside of Maui/Hawaii. So now the world’s best cross triathletes meet at the picturesque Lake Molveno in the Brenta Dolomites.
“Our vision is to host Xterra Worlds on every continent, from Europe to Asia and Africa to the Americas,” said JD Cousens, XTERRA VP of Operations & Global Marketing. “This will allow our wonderful sport to reach uncharted territory, welcoming new followers to our global community and offering a wide variety of unique endurance challenges to our athletes from around the world.”
The Xterra World Championship comes to the athletes
Trentino has breathtaking nature in the middle of the Brenta Dolomites and last September hosted the first Xterra Trentino Dolomiti Paganella events including the Xterra EM. The departure from the Xterra birthplace of Maui also has to do with the fact that in Europe the number of cross triathletes and corresponding events is greater than anywhere else in the world. With the new World Cup venue, participation will be significantly easier for many athletes and also more affordable. In addition, the CO2 footprint is reduced accordingly by eliminating long flights.
Eventually there will be a return to Maui
“Maui is where we were born, we will return one day, and we are forever grateful to our hosts, partners, crew and athletes who laid the foundation for Xterra in Hawaii,” said Cousens. “It was their spirit of adventure that put Xterra on the map more than two decades ago, and it’s the same spirit that drives us into the future now.”
Great promotional value expected for tourism in the Trentino region
“Trentino is proud to host the Xterra World Championship,” said Maurizio Rossini, CEO of Trentino Marketing. “The world of cross triathlon will compete in a splendid natural landscape, in a sustainable way that respects the environment, thus enhancing the Trentino, the Paganella plateau and the beautiful Lake Molveno. The media coverage of the event will be bring the images of this destination to more than 170 countries around the world through more than 90 television channels, confirming Trentino’s characteristic of being a true open-air gym ready to welcome outdoor sports lovers from all over the world to recieve.”
