Vaccination once morest Covid-19 largely protects once morest severe forms of the virus, but not completely. Who are the French people hospitalized despite their vaccination? Age, sex and comorbidities: we explain the risk factors.

In 2021, very vulnerable older men

Epi-Phare has launched a vast study on the profile of vaccinated people. Between January and August 2021, in full variant Delta, age was a risk factor. Indeed, people aged 85-89 were four times more likely to be hospitalized than people aged 45-54. Men were 1.6 times more likely to be hospitalized despite vaccination than women.

Comorbidities increase risk

The presence of comorbidity significantly increases the risk of hospitalizations. Thus, according to the study, 90% of vaccinated people hospitalized and 98% of those who died of Covid had at least one comorbidity in 2021. Patients with comorbidités suffer from a chronic disease (diabetes for example), heart failure, respiratory or renal failure, an autoimmune disease (such as multiple sclerosis) or are transplanted.

Omicron: younger hospitalized patients

“Among infected or hospitalized patients, the share affected by the Omicron variant is higher in the youngest and in vaccinated people”, notes a DREES study at the end of January. However, “the probability of being hospitalized with Omicron is lower than with Delta, especially for people aged between 40 and 80,” the note adds.
