Convoy of demonstrators in Belgium: Brussels airport warns travelers

Brussels Airport is warning travelers who wish to connect to the airport on Sunday to take their precautions as the capital risks being disrupted on Monday by the arrival of a convoy of demonstrators. “Keep an eye on the news, arrive early and take the train if possible“, advises airport spokeswoman Nathalie Pierard.

The self-proclaimed “freedom” convoys, a motley protest by people opposed to health measures, are calling to reach the center of Brussels and its European district on Monday. According to the French police, around a hundred vehicles would be heading towards the Belgian capital despite the authorities’ ban on the demonstration.

The fear is that demonstrators will block the access roads to Brussels-National airport. The police will be deployed to secure these accesses for passengers and employees, but Brussels Airport asks travelers to closely monitor the development of the situation and to leave early enough not to miss their flight. “We recommend taking the train, whenever possible“, adds Ms. Pierard. About 12,000 passengers departing from Zaventem national airport are expected on Monday.
