“A downward trend is observed in the level of contamination”, notes the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Brittany in its weekly health situation update this Friday, February 11. As elsewhere in France, the fifth wave seems to have passed its peak in the region.
If the words of the ARS give hope following weeks of bad news, the virus is still actively circulating in Brittany, the figures remain very high, and “collective vigilance must be maintained by scrupulous respect for barrier gestures” warns the public institution.
57,284 new cases of covid were recorded this week in Brittany. A figure in sharp decline (-44%) following three weeks above the 100,000 mark. With a peak at 117,976 the week of January 21 to 28.
The number of contaminations returns to its level of the first week of January, but remains well above the figures of the previous waves. 795,402 Bretons have been affected by covid since the start of the pandemic, and 48% of these contaminations have taken place in the past four weeks.
The incidence rate, which had climbed to 3,458.1 on January 28, and had since remained above the 3,000 mark, is now 2,056.6 cases per 100,000 population. That’s a 38% drop from last week. Two out of 100 Bretons tested positive for covid this week.
At the national level, the incidence rate is 2,163.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Also down sharply, it maintains roughly the same gap with the Breton level.
The positivity rate decreases slightly, but remains above the national average (31.7%). It is currently at 36.2% in the region, which means that almost four out of ten tests carried out this week were positive. Last week it was 39.6%.
Last week, 60 deaths of covid patients were recorded by the ARS. Either the heaviest human toll since the start of the pandemic. This week, this figure is exceeded, since 63 Bretons have died of covid in the past seven days.
634 hospitalizations for covid are in progress in Brittany (8 less than last week, including 69 in intensive care (10 less).
9,852 contaminations have been recorded in Côtes-d’Armor in the past seven days, well below the other departments in the region. The incidence rate there is 1,990.7 and has fallen below the 2,000 mark, whereas it was above 3,000 last week. The positivity rate of 36.2% is down slightly.
Last week, the incidence rate of Finistère was the only one to continue its sharp increase, when those of the neighboring departments stabilized (Côtes d’Armor) or fell (Morbihan and Ille-et-Vilaine). It now follows the trend with a drop of 938.8 points in one week, but becomes the highest incidence rate in the region, with 2,117.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. 16,581 new cases were registered in seven days, and the positivity rate is 36.3%.
12,863 cases have been identified in Morbihan this week. A figure halved in seven days. The incidence rate drops to 2,076.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (-1,406.6 points) but the positivity rate of 38.7% remains the highest in the region.
Long much more affected than the other Breton departments during this fifth wave, Ille-et-Vilaine is now confused with the regional trend. 17,988 cases have been recorded there over the past seven days, the incidence rate (2,027.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) is one of the lowest in Brittany, and the positivity rate (34.6%) is below the regional average.
