Seven people were injured in a fire that broke out on Friday evening in an apartment in Crans-Montana (VS). One of them is seriously affected, the Valais police announced on Saturday.

The fire broke out around 9:45 p.m. in an apartment on the 3rd floor of a building that has five, a police spokesman told Keystone-ATS. A third party alarmed the cantonal police engagement center of a release of smoke.

Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and extinguish it around midnight. About thirty men of the fire were engaged. A resident who was unconscious on the threshold of his apartment was able to be extracted from the building by the firefighters. He was immediately airlifted to HUG in Geneva. His vital prognosis is engaged.

Six other residents of the building were transported to the emergency room of Sion hospital. Three of them were transported by ambulance, placed under oxygen. The other three were brought there by firefighters for further checks.

The damage to the building is substantial. Two apartments were completely destroyed by the flames. A total of fifty people from three buildings were evacuated.

The causes of the fire are not yet known. The public prosecutor opened an investigation.
