Washington The USA wants to strengthen its diplomatic and security policy engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. This emerges from a 12-page document published by the government on Friday (local time).

Accordingly, the US wants to modernize alliances, strengthen new partnerships and invest in regional organizations to curb China’s growing influence in the region. “The People’s Republic of China combines its economic, diplomatic, military and technological power to gain influence in the Indo-Pacific region and become the most influential country in the world,” the statement said.

“We are aware that we have only limited ability to change China, so we are trying to shape the strategic environment around China,” a person familiar with the matter told reporters, adding that the document does not reflect the country’s broader China strategy reflect government. This is global in scope, but recognizes that the Indo-Pacific region is a particularly competitive region, the insider said.

The document contains an action plan for the next twelve to 24 months. It also states that the US wants to expand the US Coast Guard presence in the Indo-Pacific, where Washington sees China as a threat to fishing and free trade routes.

On the highly sensitive potential trouble spot of Taiwan, Washington will work with partners inside and outside the region to maintain peace and stability. The document also reaffirms US plans to launch the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework initiative in early 2022 to improve trade relations between the United States and the region.

The release of the plan coincided with a visit to the Indo-Pacific region by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to underscore the US priority for the region.
