Back in pictures on the life of Whitney Houston.
Ten years ago, on February 11, 2012, Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel room from an overdose. On that day, the American singer left behind millions of mourning fans with heavy hearts, mourning the vibrant words and the natural beauty of the one whose purity of voice was unanimous around the world. If the world of music has taken a tender liking to the star Whitney Houston since its inception, the star has conquered many other hearts, and sometimes in secret. That of Robyn Crawford, her assistant and best friend, did not remain unscathed and the two young women of the time maintained a passionate and hidden romantic relationship for years.
Long kept secret, the relationship between Whitney Houston and her assistant has now been known for Robyn Crawford’s revelations in her memoir published in 2019, “A Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston” (“A song for you: my life with Whitney Houston”). “We were friends. We were lovers. We were all for each other,” wrote Robyn Crawford, stepping out of the shadows and confirming the multiple rumors regarding their fusional relationship. She returned in this work on their meeting before evoking their joys then the complications. Whitney Houston, coming from a Christian family and growing notoriety, might not afford to reveal this relationship in broad daylight. She then decided to put an end to their “physical relationship” and Robyn Crawford remembers: “Whitney told me that her mother had told her that it was not natural for two women to be so close. But we were. We never labeled our relationship, saying we were lesbian or gay. We were just living our lives and I hoped it would last forever. (…) Whitney knows that I loved her and I know that she loved me. We meant everything to each other. We had sworn to be there for each other.
“They were like twins, inseparable”
Whitney Houston’s 1992 marriage to Bobby Brown is then an unbearable ordeal. The highly publicized couple will have a daughter, Bobby Christina (born in 1993 and died in 2015 following an overdose). But Whitney Houston, despite all her efforts, cannot bring herself to separate for good from Robyn, who has become indispensable to her, both professionally and personally. According to several testimonies collected for the documentary “Whitney: Can I Be Me” released in 2017, “Robyn and Whitney were like twins. They were inseparable,” said Kevin Ammons, who provided security for the artist. And this connection has not escaped Bobby Brown. “They had such a bond that Bobby Brown might never dismiss Robyn.” “They were fighting for the favors [de Whitney Houston, ndlr]. Bobby and Robyn came to blows and sometimes it was not him who won … But Whitney always stood between them to calm things down, ”said Ellin Lavar. “Robyn was the person who kept him going.”

The two women will no longer see each other and Whitney Houston will then begin her slow descent into hell. After an undeniable success until the beginning of the 2000s, she faced addiction and health problems and died on February 11, 2012, at the age of 48. She is found dead in the bathtub of her hotel room in Beverly Hills, a few hours before the Grammy Awards ceremony where she was to sign her return to the stage.
