Boston Jamaican-born economist Susan Collins becomes the first black woman to head one of the twelve districts of the US Federal Reserve. She will take office on July 1, the Boston Fed announced on Wednesday.
Collins was educated at Harvard and at MIT and dealt with trade, exchange rates and emerging markets, among other topics. She is transferring from the University of Michigan to Boston to follow Eric Rosengren, who left the federal Reserve following a debate on controversial securities transactions. Collins has been a U.S. citizen since 1997.
The regional Fed presidents are not nominated by the President and do not have to be confirmed by the Senate.
