In a few days, Samsung is preparing to unveil the Galaxy S22 lineup, and it has made a new material to be used in the product, a material made of plastic in discarded fishing nets.
The company says it will soon be incorporating plastics recycled from the ocean across its entire product line, and the first example might be the Galaxy devices that are supposed to be presented at its Unpacked event on Wednesday, February 9.
It is not yet clear to what extent the materials may be used or in what parts of the products. Samsung is also not explicit regarding how it will fit any of the device designs.
Quoting a report issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, it says that 640,000 tons of fishing nets are dumped into the oceans every year. Samsung says these nets pose a threat to marine life and coral reefs. “These neglected fishing nets are disturbing the delicate balance of our environment at an alarming rate,” the company wrote in a blog post. Collecting and reusing these nets is a vital first step in keeping our oceans clean as well as the planet and our collective future.
