Argentina “Participate in One Belt, One Road”… Ecuador “FTA Negotiations Begin”
(Mexico City = Yonhap News) Correspondent Mi-hye Koh = Presidents of Argentina and Ecuador, who attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, respectively, and promised to strengthen cooperation with China.
Argentine President Alberto Fernandez tweeted following the summit on the 6th (local time), “I had a friendly, friendly and fruitful meeting with President Xi.
‘One Belt, One Road’ refers to the land and sea Silk Road linking China, Central Asia and Europe, and is a mega economic zone initiative led by China.
“This is great news,” Fernandez said, adding that he might receive more than $23 billion in Chinese investment.
The two leaders discussed cooperation in a wide range of fields, including trade, currency and digital economy, including agreeing on a five-year agricultural cooperation plan through a 40-minute meeting, the Argentinean government said.
Center-left President Fernandez also met with Vladimir Putin in Russia before his visit to Beijing and said that he should end his economic dependence on the United States and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso, a centre-right, also used the participation in the Beijing Winter Olympics as an opportunity to strengthen relations with China.
In a post on Twitter following the summit meeting the day before, President Lasso said, “I had a productive meeting with President Xi in China.
Specifically, the two leaders signed a memorandum of understanding to start negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA), and agreed to officially begin renegotiation of the Ecuadorian government’s debt to China, President Lasso said.
In addition, China has decided to donate 2.5 million doses of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) vaccine to Ecuador for the inoculation of children.
