Due to the rapid spread of the Omicron mutant virus, the number of new cases of COVID-19 is also soaring.

As of 00:00 on the 6th, there were 38,691 new confirmed cases of COVID-19. It was close to 40,000, showing the highest number once more.

The number of new cases has risen sharply from 10,000 to 30,000 in the past week.

Usually, on weekends, the number of tests decreases and the number of confirmed cases decreases, but the ‘weekend effect’ seems to have disappeared in the followingmath of the Lunar New Year holiday, when movement and contact increased.

In particular, with more than 11,000 confirmed cases in Gyeonggi-do, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Korea has surpassed 1 million, bringing the number to 1,09,688.

There were 272 cases of severe serious illness, and the death toll increased by 15, including a teenage high school student who died following the quarantine was lifted in Gwangju.

The completion rate of inoculation was 86% in the second and 54.9% in the third. The fatality rate of COVID-19 is 0.68%.

The government is planning to review a plan to manage seasonal flu if the fatality rate remains stable, but there are voices in the medical community that we need to be cautious.

As the epidemic has not yet reached its peak, it is necessary to prepare for the time when the number of critically ill and death toll increases following the early stages of the spread of Omicron.

<김우주 / 고려대구로병원 감염내과 교수> “The number of new confirmed cases is expected to increase the most in late February and early March, and the number is likely to exceed 100,000. It is not possible to say the final Omicron’s fatality rate with the current figures.”

While the quarantine authorities have extended the current social distancing measures for two more weeks, from this week, the target of prescription drugs for COVID-19 will be expanded from those in their 60s to those in their 50s with underlying diseases.
