Given the demonstrations by students and academics from the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) for autonomy, the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador He pointed out that “during the predominance of neoliberal politics”, education was at the service of minorities and not of the people.
In his morning conference this Friday at the National Palace, López Obrador accused that in the neoliberal period they even messed with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (ONE) and pointed out that they made CIDE “a very similar version” to the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM).
“Unfortunately, what they did with CIDE was a version very similar to ITAM, and even second-rate, because ITAM had (Pedro) Aspe, (José Antonio) as teachers. Meade, to Luis) Videgaray; that is, bruises of conservative thought.
“CIDE was already a copy, a second version. It didn’t start that way because it was to train public servants for the benefit of the nation’s interests and they end up hating public service,” declared the President of Mexico.

López Obrador compared “the power of ITAM” with “the power of the media.”
“But the power of ITAM reached the point of imposing an ITAM candidate. Do you know who really put, speaking in silver, removing the accessories (…) getting to the point because the rest is pacha. Who put Meade? Did President Peña put it, did the PRI put it? No, Videgaray put it!” López Obrador declared.
He charged that the intelligentsia prevailed in the neoliberal period and they should even apologize “for what they did in those 36 years.”
He endorsed his respect for CIDE students and academics “because it helps to open a debate on education at the service of the oligarchy or at the service of the people.”
“It is even good that there is this strike because it helps to open a debate on these issues; education at the service of the oligarchy or education at the service of the people; or educational content. Is it going to continue with the same, with the formulas learned or prescribed from abroad, the so-called structural reforms? And is it going to continue setting aside our agenda, that of Mexico, that of fighting poverty and fighting corruption? ?”, He said.
