The heartbreaking story of María, a Venezuelan who crossed the Darién Jungle, gives an account of the dangers and risks that migrants run on the journey to arrive irregularly in another country.
In statements to TVV, the Venezuelan reported that she was raped by seven men in front of a group of people who were also passing through the place.
The Darién Jungle is one of the irregular routes used by migrants to pass from Colombia to Panama.
Many have described it as one of the most dangerous steps because they expose themselves to sexual assault, kidnapping, robbery, and murder.
Regardless of age, women and girls are the main victims of organized crime groups. For the time being, the Government of Panama has not responded to the complaint.
She assured that the other people who were at the scene of the events might not help her or the other women who were victims of aggression, since they threatened to kill those who tried.
“Run, leave, otherwise we’re going to shoot you in the back,” said the aggressors, following abusing her and other women. Among the victims was also a 13-year-old girl of Cuban nationality.
