Jacques Villeneuve pays touching tribute to his father

The family of racing driver Jacques Villeneuve grew on Wednesday with the arrival of little Gilles, named in honor of the illustrious father of the former Formula 1 champion.

“Baby Gilles has joined our beautiful and large family. Strong and healthy. My love Mama Giulia is splendid. We are swimming in happiness and we are truly blessed. A perfect day,” wrote Villeneuve on his Instagram account.

The Quebecer had four boys – Jules, Joakim, Benjamin and Henri – born from previous unions. Naming his fifth child Gilles is a beautiful tribute to his late father, who tragically died in an accident at the Belgian Grand Prix almost 40 years ago.

A popular driver with Ferrari in the 1970s and 1980s, Gilles Villeneuve won six races in Formula 1. Fifteen years following his death, in 1997, Jacques won the championship with the Williams team.
