Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has sacked his head of military intelligence, Major General Abel Kandiho. Major General James Burungi is the new Director of Military Intelligence (CMI). His predecessor, Abel Kandiho, was appointed ambassador to neighboring South Sudan. The change at the head of the Directorate of Military Intelligence comes days following President Museveni’s eldest son, who is also the commander of the land forces, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, met Rwandan President Paul Kagame over the weekend. last, to discuss a wide range of topics, including relations between the two countries. Analysts say talks between Kagame and Keinerugaba may have led to Kandiho’s dismissal from his prestigious post as Uganda’s spy chief. The visit came at a time when Rwanda and Uganda are still at loggerheads following nearly four years of strained relations, despite diplomatic efforts to resolve their differences. A tweet from the Rwandan presidency informs that Kagame and his host had “cordial, productive and forward-looking discussions on Rwanda’s concerns and the practical steps needed to restore relations with its neighbor, Uganda”. For his part, Kainerugaba tweeted, “We had very cordial and thorough discussions on ways and means to improve our bilateral relations.”
