Game News PUBG: A resounding return for Fortnite’s competitor?
After a first launch on the hats of wheels on Xbox One and PC, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, more commonly known as PUBG, saw its community divided over the updates. To counter this growing problem, KRAFTON, the studio behind the license, recently decided to change the economic model of its Battle-Royale. This bet already seems to have won.
Luring in with the various free-to-play Battle-Royales offered by the competition, starting with Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty : Warzone, the players of PUBG have gradually abandoned their favorite title, leaving many servers empty. To try to overcome this problem, KRAFTON tried several different approaches. The studio notably added crossplay between platforms, then bots (players controlled by the computer) to fill the different parts and satisfy the remaining players. But, as you’d expect, playing once morest the computer doesn’t bring the same satisfaction as playing once morest real human players. The servers therefore continued to gradually empty. Recently, therefore, the South Korean studio used the hard way: it changed the economic model of its game.
A new economic system for a new breath
Like its competitors therefore, PUBG is now a free-to-play work, that is to say that the game is accessible free of charge for everyone, regardless of the machine chosen. And this new direction already seems to have borne fruit since the Battle-Royale is getting a real gain in interest from players. According to the developer, the title was the highest ranked on Steam on January 12 thanks to its transition to the free-to-play model and has experienced a similar growth rate to that of its launch in 2017. Indeed, the milestone of 690,000 active players on the shooter has been reached, which represents a 486% increase in terms of new players. The average play time per player has also been increased. Between the week of January 3 and the week of January 10, players have indeed doubled their playing time.
Also according to the South Korean developer, the game modes that have had the most success are “Basic Training”, “AI Training Matches” and “Lobby Tutorials”.
Rewards on the program
To celebrate this transition with players, PUBG will be hosting the “Check-In Dinner Event” in the coming days. The latter will offer daily rewards for all players who play the game for at least one hour between 1:00 a.m. on January 27 and 12:59 a.m. on January 30. Also note that players who log in at least three times from today until February 17 at 12:59 a.m. will also leave with exclusive Orbital Vanguard skins.
Each week, fans will be able to win a unique color variation (Cadet Green, Cadet Pink, Cadet Yellow, and Cadet Blue) of the Orbital Vanguard skin. Those who collect all three variations will receive a bonus fifth color variation: Cadet Red. KRAFTON via press release
