The lifting or not of the ban on building new nuclear power plants in Switzerland divides the liberal-radicals. While the party leadership is in favor of it, the PLR Women oppose a rollback.

“To speak out now in favor of building new plants sends the wrong and misleading signal. This torpedoes the efforts to develop renewable energies”, considers in the «NZZ on Sunday» National Councilor Susanne Vincenz-Stauffacher (SG), President of PLR Women.

In view of the assembly of delegates, the Women PLR plan to organize their own hearings with specialists in order to define their position on this subject, explains the Saint-Galloise.

Other liberal-radical parliamentarians also voice criticism. Jacqueline de Quattro, Vaud national councilor and former environment minister of her canton, says she knows from experience that it is difficult to advance the development of renewable energies. “In this context, asking now for the lifting of the ban on the construction of nuclear power plants is counterproductive,” she says.

“There is no popular majority or investors for new nuclear power plants.”

The national councilor had already warned once morest including this passage in the document when drawing up the resolution: “If this passes, we, the liberal-radicals, will have to constantly justify ourselves regarding this decision instead to talk regarding wind, hydro and solar energy.” She will propose to the PLR delegates to delete the passage on nuclear power because “there is no popular majority or investors for new nuclear power plants”.
